Local Jupiter History and Facts

Jupiter LighthouseOriginally populated by the Hobe Native American tribe who made their home at the mouth of the Loxahatchee River, Jupiter gained its name from a curious set of events. Originally, Spanish-speaking mapmakers incorrectly labeled the area as "Jove", mistakenly attributing the Spanish spelling of the Native American tribe as the Latin translation of the Roman ruler of the gods, Jupiter. As subsequent mapmakers repeated the original error, the name for the community became standardized.

One of the most noteworthy landmarks in Jupiter is the famed red painted brick Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse which completed construction in 1860. The iconic lighthouse is so beloved in the area that it is often utilized as the town symbol.
